Multicultural Night 2019

H.C. Storm really knows how to throw a Multicultural Night!

This year’s event included 16 rooms full of cultural activities for all BPS101 families who visited. Families got free eye exams from the Batavia Lions Club and learned about Mexico, Germany, Russia, Poland, Ireland, China, Philippines/South Korea, and Uganda through dance, martial arts, crafts, games, cuisine, stories, Kahoot, and more.

Check out the event in pictures:

In the Germany room, students made hats fit for a Grimm’s fairy tale.

The West Chicago Folklorico Student Dance Troupe held performances in the HCS gym. The dancers were phenomenal!

Batavia High School volunteers helped in the Selfie Station.

Representatives from the Batavia Public Library were at Multicultural Night sharing upcoming library activities with families, including Summer Reading Club 2019. This year’s reading club theme is “Showtime.”

All attendees received a “passport” upon arrival to get stamped in each of the activity areas.

The West Chicago Folklorico Student Dance Troupe’s costuming and performance was beautiful.

La Lotteria time in the Mexico room!

A Polish family from H.C. Storm hosted the Poland room and served several Polish treats. They were delicious!

Students played lots of fun games in “Ireland.”

The Kahoot Family Quiz tested families’ global knowledge.

Martial Arts with Master Phil!

Also in the Germany room, students got to build houses out of Keva planks. This was a very popular room!

In “The World!” room, students made a unity puzzle to share their origins and understand how we are all connected.

In the HCS Readers and Writers’ Lounge, fourth- and fifth-graders showed off their reading skills to an engaged audience.

In the Uganda room, students created masks and bookmarks. (Yes, LRC Director Diane Kispert is wearing a Barcelona shirt while working in the Uganda room. It’s international multitasking!)

In the China room, HCS teachers Jodi Bird and Jennifer Torgerson went all out on costuming, and ran out of fortune cookies because so many families stopped by to learn about Chinese culture. These two are a hoot!

Three AFS exchange students, who are currently attending Batavia High School and living with host families, shared their experience living in the United States. The AFS exchange students are from Portugal, Denmark, and Malaysia. All said they enjoy Chicago’s cold weather. What?!
